Permanently Installed Monitoring System

Wavemaker G3

Guided waves are increasingly being used for pipe inspection. One of their main advantages is their ability to inspect large lengths of inaccessible pipe from a single location. However, it is still necessary to gain access to the pipe in at least one location in order to perform the inspection. In many cases, gaining this access accounts for part of the inspection cost. Where regular inspection is needed, leaving a transducer in place on the pipe and exposing a connector in a convenient to access location can provide a substantial cost savings.

The requirement for permanent monitoring implies that the pipe is in some way difficult to access. For this reason there is a big advantage in using a monitoring system that will give as much detail as possible about any defects that are detected. For this reason GUL has ensured that their monitoring transducers are able to generate that same high level of results that can be achieved by using the conventional pipe testing transducer of the Wavemaker system. The key proven features that the PIMS offer when used with the G3 system are as follows:

PIMS installed on subsea line
Key Features
Sensitivity to cross sectional change of less than 1%
Circumferential location and angular extent of defects (unrolled pipe display)
Dynamic frequency sliding
Unrolled pipe display giving c-scan like representation from a single data collection
Environmentally sealed transducer for operation on buried or submersed lines
Cable length of more than 100m to allow for wide range of transducer location

Transducer Details

The transducer is produced as a low profile flexible circuit which is glued and clamped in place on the pipe surface. The whole transducer is then sealed in a polyurethane jacket to provide complete environmental protection. The complete sealed unit height is only 10mm giving a wide range of possible install locations. Transducers have been made to fit pipes from 2” diameter up to 42”, although there is virtually no limit to the maximum size that can be produced.

Connection and Collection

The connection box is a sealed weatherproof box. This stores the test parameters such as pipe size, orientation and the identification of the reference file that should be used to compare the most recent data with. This allows the software to select all of the appropriate collection parameters without the need for any operator input. This ensures that the same data set is collected regardless of the operator.

Wavemaker PIMS Features
The PIMS transducers give virtually identical results to the removable transducer rings used in the Wavemaker G3 system. Using the G3 with the PIMS transducer gives pipe operators a number of key benefits:
Due to the excellent repeatability of results from the PIMS, changes in pipe cross-section of less than 1% have been detected
Unique dynamic frequency sliding gives large improvement in detection of defects, where arbitrary defect shape mean that discrete frequency analysis may not detected critical defects.
Unrolled pipe display gives immediate access to C-scan style result that allow defect location to be more accurately determined. The added sensitivity of this display is immediately available to the operator and does not require that he needs to collect additional data to focus the guided waves.
Cable lengths can be in excess of 100m allows flexibility in locating the connection point
Programming of transducer and test location details into connection box allows for an automated collection sequence which aids productivity and repeatability, reducing operator dependency on the data collected and makes repeat testing a simple plug and collect operation.
The low profile of transducer gives flexibility in choosing installation location.
