MFL Inspection of Pipework

 

  
 

 

Silverwing ME Ltd offers Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) inspection of pipework using the Silverwing Pipescan system. It is suitable for the inspection pipe walls made of mild steel up to 20mm thick and with non-magnetic coatings up to 6mm thick

Pipescan is a portable, magnetic flux leakage inspection system for the detection of random internal corrosion in pipe runs. The latest magnetic material coupled with a unique mechanical design enables coverage of all pipe diameters from 2 " to 96" / 50 mm to 2.4 metres with a limited number of scanning heads.

Unlike some other inspection methods, MFL is not affected by product flowing through the pipe runs so surveys can be carried out both on-line and off-line. Use of Pipescan, with its high probability of detection, to locate actual internal corrosion, coupled with A scan ultrasonic monitoring of corrosion growth, provides a cost effective accurate system for the determination of plant integrity.

Pipework Inspection Limitations

The sensitivity of the above system varies with increasing wall thickness - please contact us for limits. Similarly there are limitations to the maximum thickness of coating through which satisfactory inspection can be carried out as wall thickness increases.
As with all inspection methods the effectiveness of inspection is affected by the cleanliness and preparation of the pipe’s scanning surface. In particular, magnetic debris and weld spatter can lead to false indications.

The system has a physical limit to the proximity to welds and pipe flanges that can be achieved. The untested areas mentioned above are to be inspected using ultrasonics unless otherwise stated.
